Raising funds to support SOS Children's Villages
In tandem with attempting a first British ascent of Makalu via the South East Ridge we are also trying to raise money to fund charitable work in the area surrounding mount Makalu.
SOS Children's Villages work to provide a family for life for children who have lost their parents through conflict, famine, disease and poverty. SOS Children’s Village’s Nepal aim to reduce child abandonment, a major issue in Nepal, by strengthening poverty-stricken families and helping them to become self-sustainable over time.
Over 78,000 orphaned or abandoned children are cared for by SOS mothers in family homes in 500 children’s villages, in 124 countries worldwide. A further million benefit from SOS Children’s outreach support which includes education, vocational training, medical care and community development programmes.
Makalu stands an impressive 8463 meters in height and therefore we have set our fundraising target at the same level. With your help we hope to raise £8463.00. 100% of the amount we raise will go towards a project working with children in the Barun-Makalu area of Nepal.
Makalu 2008 fundraising results
On our trek towards Base Camp, we passed through the village of Tashigaon. At the lower end of the village sits the school with a much needed brand new building.
Providing support for the school was part of our aim for the previous attempt on Makalu in 2008. A new 2 storey building now sits adjacent to the original school, duly marked with a plaque displaying the 3 service crests and acknowledging the support of the British Services Makalu Expedition 2008.
It was wonderful to be able to see the benefit that we had provided with a relatively small amount of funds. What's more, with funds raised in 2008 we were also able to fund the purchase of a motorbike for SOS Children's Village, Sanothimi, to enable field visits by our community outreach workers.
There is still so much work that needs to be done. The children of the Nepalese Himalaya's will truly benefit from your generous donation. Thank you very much.
